I screwed up

Tue Jul 15, 2008 6:16 pm

Well, I learned my lesson. Never go to the brew store drunk.

Last saturday I was buying supplies to make a hefe. I grabbed the wrong yeast packet by mistake, and didn't notice it until tonight.

While I was cooking my wort I saw that I had picked up a yeast for ciders and wines. The wort was already cooking, and I had no backup. I pitched it in anyways as an experiment.

My question is, what should I expect? I'm a new brewer and...obviously...a drunk and an idiot.

Among my other hobbies I have noticed that sometimes you can do something great simply because you were too dumb to know it couldn't be done. Maybe that's the case here. 8)

Keep us posted as to how it turns out. You are venturing into virgin territory there.

Well the question would be what yeast did you get? That way maybe we could figure out what it could turn out to be like.

The next question would be why did the clerk not ask if that was what you really wanted. After all you must have been buying malt and hops to make beer and not wine/cider. Maybe you shop at some mega store and they just listen for the beep as they scan it. I shop at a small store and they ask why I picked what I did. they learn and so do I.

I had once read of a Chimay clone that used Champagne yeast. Who knows, you might get something very cool out of it.

At least you didn't use bread yeast. I had a buddy who was drunk when brewing once, couldn't find his yeast vials, and was in no shape to drive to the LHBS. He ended up pitching 3 packets of dry bread yeast. Lemme tell ya, Fleischmann's kicks off some funky flavors

Gbob! Don't worry, relax, etc. This is your first true experiment in home brewing! Let us know what yeast you pitched, but it might just turn out... interesting!

Early on in my home brew career I tried to make my own recipe. I hadn't read any books on how to make a style, I just approached it like I was cooking. A dash of this, a little of that... A lot of crap! It was drinkable, though, and damn if I didn't drink every bottle!

Good luck, and keep us posted!!!
