In practice I've found that repitches from my IPA (OG 1.067, 7.3%, and 121 theoretical IBUs) work incredibly well. In fact, I most often use my IPA to prop up yeast for my RIS, b-wine, or DIPA. I use Cal ale on all of those beers and I've never had any issues with attenuation or off-flavors. As a general rule, I pitch up and/or across. That said, I never reuse yeast after a RIS, b-wine, or DIPA - that's the end of the road for those yeasties.
