Do you have two of those super-deluxe probe things? Maybe you could redo the experiment with more precision than any of the rest of us.

My guess is that if warm pitching initially the edge would be cooler and the core warmer. As the yeast get going there won't be any difference. As the yeast slow down the core will lag slightly behind the edge.

Although it would be academically interesting, I suspect the yeast don't care *that* much.

I'd love to see a pic of people's "prob-to-carboy-covered-with-foam" set up. I'm going to buy a fridge soon and temp control is going to be high on the list of things to do.

I've just been sticking the probe next to the carboy underneath a dishtowel. Basically it goes beer-carboy-probe-dish towel-brew hauler. The tight brew hauler keeps everything pretty tight. I haven't tried a probe into the actual beer, but I know this is better than just leaving the probe hanging in the fridge.
