Too Much DME in starter

Thu Jul 16, 2009 3:04 am

I am in the process of making my first starter. Looked on the net to find out how to do it, and then proceeded to do it wrong. For some reason I had 2 cups of DME in my brain, so I went with 2 cups DME, 4 cups water, and pitched 1056 after cooling. Going to be using this in a high gravity IIPA Brew House kit with modifications.
This morning I woke up and there is definite fermentation going on, so if I left it for a couple of days, then cooled and decanted, will there be enough cells for the beer?

What's your OG going to be?

and how could you POSSIBLY be on the brewing network and not know about the pope's calculator

next time you make a starter go metric and use a scale. it's much simpler. 100 grams of DME per 1000 mL of water, and measuring DME by weight is a lot more accurate and precise than volume (cups).

your gravity on that starter is pretty high. a 1.040 starter should be about 1 cup DME to 2 quarts (8 cups) of water. so instead of a DME to water ratio by volume of about 1:8 you've got 1:2. that being said, RDWHAHB. this will probably work out fine.

You will have enough cells most likely, but they may be stressed from the hi gravity starter. you should be fine though - let it ride.

Went ahead with this starter, everything worked out fine so far. Transfered into secondary for dry hopping yesterday and the sample for the hydrometer is holy crap batman hoppy. Also, got the gravity down from 1.092 to 1.020. Another couple weeks in the secondary and hope to get it down a little more.
