"Brewing Classic Styles" Fermentation Directions

Fri Apr 17, 2009 4:12 am

Hello All -

I just picked up "Brewing Classic Styles" and I'm a bit confused on the fermentation directions. For every one of the recipes, it generally says to use some type of White Labs liquid yeast. But then under the Fermentation directions, some recipes state to use up to 6 liquid yeast packages or an appropriate starter. What do they mean by 6 liquid yeast packages? They cannot mean putting 6 viles of White Labs yeast in, can they? Any help is appreciated!

For "optimum" fermentation, yes... he means use the volume (yeast cell count) of six vials worth... so buy one and make a starter with it to get the volume indicated.

Yes, yes he does. Use the chart in the back to figure out what size starter to make. At that much yeast needed, you might want to step the starter up a couple times instead of one giant starter.

Thanks for the responses! You've been most helpful! I haven't ever done a starter up until this point (didn't know it was really necessary)...so, now am I not only going to be doing a starter, I even built my own stir plate. You learn something new about this hobby every 3 seconds....

Thanks again!
