confused!!

Sat Apr 18, 2009 4:32 pm

ok so i listened to the white brothers on one of the sunday sessions and i am confused as F&#k. I'm about to make a yeast starter for a Marzen so what do i do? does anyone have some suggestion. do i start it cold and let it take a week to grow? or do it warm a couple of days before? I know i need probably a half gallon starter so where do i find how much DME to use? And should i use some type of pilsner malt extract to make the starter considering thats the base malt? i'm still doing my reading in how to brew but i always like to run it past others to see experiences.

thanks for any help

I usually pitch two vials when I am doing a lager into a big starter according to mrmalty.com.

Go ahead and do your starter in the high 60's and start it about a week before your brew. If you are using an Erlemyer (sp) flask you will find that a carboy cap for a 6.5 gal carboy will fit on the 5L flask. Put in a sterile filter into the smaller of the two openings in the carboy cap and cap the other. Then you can slowly chill your starter over two days without drawing in anything airborne while your starter chills. Decant your starter just before pitching. I drop my starter down to 44 which is where I start my lagers.

Then you are good to go. Hope this helps.

Sanitized foil works just fine, too.
