As long as you were clean, the beer should be ok. I side with the "pitch more yeast now" camp. Even after it gets up and running, those yeast are going to be stressed out. The beer won't be bad, but it will be typical underpitching results - estery....

Go to www.mrmalty.com and figure out how much you should have originally pitched and correct it now.

Pitch rate is right alongside of temp control as far as importance to the end goal.

In your case I'd have pitched a pack of dry yeast. Always keep a few packs of Safale-04 and 05 on hand for emergencies. That said, I really like to use these yeasts when appropriate for the style. When I use them I pitch 2 packs for a 5 gallon batch.

So, what happened?

What Happened -- I took the advice of the pitchers after 24 hours of no indication that the brew was active. I added 1.9 vials (according to mrmalty.com specs) of White Labs British Ale yeast and within 12 hours it was pumping away. It has been active almost all week and settled down the last two days. I think it has been saved.

Thanks to all who advised, the beer was not a total loss. After repitching with almost two vials the brew came to a bubble within five hours time and fermented out rather well considering. I dry hopped, put it in a secondary for three more days to let the massive amounts of yeast settle, then bottled it up. Popped the crock on one last night. Not too bad at all. Good creamy suds and a lot of body. OG was 1.052 and ended up at 1.005. Bitter and a little fruity, probably some esters!?! Who knows.
