It sounds like they're too hard to clean unless you have an autoclave.

They can be boiled and soaked in Star San, but the issue is bugs and yeast hanging around the lip or the flask. Foil covers the whole top, just like a carboy hood covers the whole top of a carboy.

+1, that is the main reason I stick with foil. If you don't flame the lip of your flask when you use a stopper, bugs will be growing on the exposed lip... the foil protects against that, and makes it easier for the lazy brewers 8)
