I always make a 1.8 liter starter 24 hours before pitching time. I don't cool it I just pitch the whole thing. I have a stir plate and the starter just spins away until I am ready to use it.

I think that starters are important but fortunately pitching is a pretty forgiving process so what ever procedure you use to get a lot of healthy active yeast into the wort is gonna work.
