Re: really low final gravity - WTF?

I was out of communication for the weekend and just got a kick out of these replies. Thanks everyone.

I kegged the batch on Sunday. I checked the FG and it was 1.010 - apparently my hydrometer had gas issues... at least that's what I told my wife - it was a pleasure to be able to blame my gas problems on someone other than the dog for a change.

This batch was a learning experience in many ways.

1) never pitch a yeast vial on it's own - always make a starter, even if you are in a hurry and want to cut corners.
2) temperature makes a big difference, I moved it up from the basement and activity increased. novel idea...
3) de-gas your hydrometer. he he... I said de-gas. he he..

Anyway, it doesn't taste too bad. hope that get's better with more carboantion but it has a slight metalic aftertaste that I wasn't expecting. At this point, just happy to have the thing in the keg after all the fits and starts this batch gave me.

I disagree about never pitching a vial on it's own. I'm a lazy... err... pragmatic brewer and I usually don't make a starter for my 1.050 and under beers.

Not to say my beers wouldn't benefit from a starter... but they do ferment out alright with just the vial.

"degas CO2 from the sample"

Sorry, skipped meds...how do you degas (i know, my lazyboy is see-thru) a sample. I spin the hydrometer to get rid of the bubbles or is there something I'm missing?

I hate to be picky, but wouldn't the CO2 raise the hydrometer and make the reading HIGHER, not lower?
