Help selecting a replacement stir plate

Mon Aug 25, 2008 11:05 am

Hey there,
After some use with 4 liter starters (lagers), my Corning PC-410 (used - from eBay of course) seems not to be spinning as well as it used to... I was wondering if anyone knew what the "liquid recommended limit" of the PC-410 happened to be - I've looked all over Corning's site to no avail.

Regardless, it looks like I'm shopping for a replacement stir plate. Anybody got stories to tell when stirring 4 liters or so?

Thanks.

Hmmm... didn't realize that there was a limit on stir plates. Since they are essentially "magnetically coupled" like your march pump - I would have thought that the magnets would give out before much force is put back on the motor. Check the bearings. Maybe you can replace or repack them.

I'm wanting to purchase a nice stir plate that will handle 2-4L starters as well. I made one but have a real time with anything over a 1L starter. I can do a 2L but its a pain in my :asshat:
Prim: Broken Neck Wheat
Sec: Flander's Red, Old Ale, Oktoberfest, High Toast ESB
Bottled: Bunga Toggles, Saison Du Mont, SS Minnow Mild
Kegged: Scotch Ale, Incarcerator, Postin Bail Amber Ale

Yeah, I had the same thoughts that the mags would limit the impact upon the motor - but guess what, I was wrong!!! Not the 1st time by any means, but apparently the stress on the motor must have done something bad - the stir plate still works, it's just that it definately doesn't have the umphh at 10 (max) that it used to have (perhaps I can get a plate with an 11  !)

Once I started looking at specs of other stir plate vendors, they all started mentioning things like 1L glycerin volume max, etc, etc, etc. It all started me thinking that I'd abused my stir plate :(
