RSS feed info causes problems with iTunes

Sun Apr 19, 2009 7:00 pm

I have had problems with recent shows appearing in iTunes out of order (aside from the White Labs/BNA problem which has been fixed), and then for some reason disappearing off my iPod after listening. I use the RSS feed URL direct rather than going through the iTunes store.

I have been scratching my head trying to work up whether it was a setting in iTunes that was broken (which I haven't been able to find), so I checked the source of the RSS feed, and I think I have worked out the problem.

In the Channel header, there is a field called "lastBuildDate" which I believe should be updated every time a new item is added (and probably should be the same as the "pubDate" of the most recent item). For example, the start of the header for the Sunday Session looks like this at the moment:

Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<rss xmlns:itunes="http://www.itunes.com/dtds/podcast-1.0.dtd" version="2.0">
<channel>
<ttl>60</ttl>
<title>The Brewing Network Presents - The Sunday Session</title>

<language>en-us</language>
<copyright>&#xA9; 2005-2007 The Brewing Network</copyright>
<lastBuildDate>Mon, 26 Feb 2007 01:00:00 GMT</lastBuildDate>

lastBuildDate should be Sun, 12 Apr 2009 00:00:00 GMT.

This make any sense, Code?

Thanks for the info, skipper. Justin hired you, didn't he?

I'm working on it, along with many other things. Give me some time.

Holy shit, that was a quick reply!

:D No. I was guessing that Justin had @#$%ed it up in the first place :asshat: .

I figured the quickest way to get it addressed rather than just bitching about would be to get off my fat arse and do some diagnostics. Hope it's useful.

Thanks for all your efforts in keeping the BN online, Code :bnarmy:
