Why use LME and DME in same recipe?

Sat Nov 24, 2012 1:56 pm

Why do I see clone recipes with a mixture of Light LME and Light DME? If it is the same extract, why use a mix of dry and liquid? I understand the fermentability differences, but why not use more LME or less DME? This drives me crazy when a recipe calls for amounts just outside of the packaging at my local homebrew store.

Simple answer is that it is much easier to store a partial bag of DME than a partial container of LME. Generally folks will write a recipe like this using the package weight of LME and make up the difference in gravity with DME.

Excellent, I was hoping that was the answer.
