From what I've heard, usually Brewer's Best kits are pretty decent for starter kits.
Sounds like yours might be a little old. Probably just the store you got it from.

Give it a whirl anyways, and order a fresh kit from one of the fine BN sponsors.
Read up the "how to brew your first extract kit" chapter on http://www.howtobrew.com, then come back here and ask us all the questions you have before you start. Somebody will answer them quickly and accurately for you here.

My first brew was Brewers Best brand. For a first brew it works just fine, mine turned out pretty well. If it weren't for a high fermentation temp mistake, mine would have been very tasty. You might be able to check with your LHBS to see when/how often they get new shipments or support the sponsors next time.

KIT TURNED OUT AWESOME.

Great tasting IPA. Was a little worried at first that the LME was to old. not sure if it was but :D turned out to be about 8.1 %. Finished off higher than i was shooting for, SG 1.081/ FG 1.019. Would have liked it to finish at 1.013 but not bad for my first brew..
