Best method of getting wort into primary fermenter

Sat Jan 16, 2010 11:38 am

Hey Guys,

New to the board and homebrewing. Just made batch #8 and have had a couple successes and a couple batches that tasted so-so. I'm using a 7 gallon brew pot and usually just pour the wort into a 6.5 gallon glass carboy through a funnel. I don't pour all of the wort into the carboy after it's cooled (hop bags and a lot of schmoo remaining in the pot). My question is whether I should be using a syphon instead of just pouring it. There always seems like there is a about an inch or two of settiment at the bottom of the primary.

Thanks in advance for any input.

On the system I had at my old house, I had a 3 tier system where the wort would go from kettle to fermenter through a ball valve I installed on the kettle. Now that I'm in an apartment and space is limited, I use an autosiphon, and it works just fine. They're designed to sit up an inch or so from the bottom, so you'll leave behind a lot of that gunk with little effort.

I siphon but use a funnel and strainer since I almost never use hop bags.

I'd also recommend adding a ball valve, makes it easy-peasy to transfer.

You guys with the ball-valves on your kettles... are you using some kind of a bazooka screen or false bottom in your kettles? Or is it just mounted high enough that you don't have to worry about such things? I'm currently just using an auto-siphon and it works pretty well... but like most of you here, I'm always looking to upgrade something. :D
