...but I've read that hop utilization is reduced in a low gravity wort (like hot water) so I always add some of my extract at 60 minutes to increase the gravity of what would otherwise be "hop tea,"...

I thought hop utilization was decreased in high gravity beers...I could certainly be wrong. Thought I read a correction factor in Ray Daniel's book.

Anyway, cheers all and glad I found TBN....truly a gift to the homebrewer with no homebrew companions in the area.

Cheers!

it's kinda both...
you need SOME stuff in your water for the hop goodies to grab onto, however at HIGH concentrations utilization is diminished.
I think a good number to shoot for is 1/2 final concentration....
EXAMPLE... you are making a 5 gal batch, boiling 2.5gal h2o, add 1/4 of your extract at the beginning then late add the rest.

Great info and discussion as well as relavent since it was just discussed on the archive I finished yesterday. I'll be interested to see how my Scotch Ale (OG: 1.11) comes out after a 120 min boil (full-wort) with all ingredients.

Thanks BUB. That will come in handy for the Tripel I am brewing tomorrow and for my next quest to build a great base Pale Ale recipe and experiment with hops.
